Quackgrass:                  quckgrass2

Quackgrass is a perennial plant that thrives on many different soil types, growing almost anywhere.

Quackgrass has creeping underground stems called rhizomes which enable it to grow rapidly across grassland.  Quakgrass has flat hairy leaves with upright flower spikes which flower May through September.  quckgrass3

Seeds are formed on the flattened spikelets which germinate in early spring.  One plant can produce up to 400 seeds per season and are easily spread by birds and when cutting the lawn.

Pre-emergence herbicide will inhibit germination of quackgrass seed and should be applied to the turf every spring to prevent infestation.

Once established, quackgrass is difficult to quackgrasscontrol requiring careful extraction procedures and or repeated exact spot spraying with a non selective herbicide.
